2015 marked a new stage in the development of the Ufa air hub. The commissioning of the new terminal almost coincided with unprecedented events in terms of responsibility: the SCO (The Shanghai Cooperation Organization) and BRICS Alliance summit meetings, which were hosted by the Ufa airport. In preparation for the summits a huge amount of work was done in the shortest possible time. In parallel with the reception of delegates, the air hub carried out a regular program of handling regular domestic and international flights according to the regular schedule.

— Summits are the main event and exam for the quality of the airport’s work, perhaps, for the entire time of its existence. During the three years of preparation for the forums we managed to make a qualitative leap forward which was shown by the competent, impeccable work of all the personnel — says the General Director of the Ufa airport Alexander Andreev.

The main difficulty of the work during the summits was that simultaneously with the reception of distinguished guests and the opening of a new international terminal Ufa airport was implementing a program of modernization of the airfield complex. In June 2015, the first stage of reconstruction was completed, which lasted for a year and a half. The apron was expanded, seven stands were built for wide-body aircraft and a special platform for de-icing treatment of aircraft.

The next stage was the reconstruction of the second artificial runway. The runway 2 load capacity allowed the Ufa airport to accept without restrictions, including the number of take-offs and landings, such aircraft as Boeing 747, Boeing 777, An-124 “Ruslan”, Airbus A330. The runway is assigned the ICAO category II, which makes it possible for aircraft to land and take off in almost any weather conditions.

— Modernization has allowed to increase the efficiency of all airfield facilities and provide an amazing increase in the airport’s capacity for the next 15–20 years — says the General Director of the Ufa International Airport Alexander Andreev. — Today we can safely declare that Ufa has one of the best airfields in Russia in terms of its technological capabilities.

One of the most important events of 2018 was the beginning of the reconstruction of the domestic terminal which will take place in two stages. Two air bridges will be added, increasing the baggage claim area. The plan provides three new baggage belts, which will allow the airport to accept and simultaneously handle at least seven flights.

It will help to increase the capacity of domestic airlines from 600 to 1.2 thousand passengers per hour and raise the quality of passenger handling to a new level.

The reconstructed arrival area is planned to be put into operation in 2019, for the 100th anniversary of the formation of the Bashkir Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic.

The second stage of reconstruction involves the implementation of the concept of a single monoblock-the domestic and international terminals will be combined into a single architectural complex.

On May 31, 2019, Ufa International Airport was named after the people’s poet of Bashkortostan Mustai Karim. The corresponding decree was signed by the President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin.

Names for 44 Russian airports were selected as part of the “Great names of Russia” project. Almost 195 thousand people voted for the new name of the airport “Ufa”, 49% of them suggested naming the air harbor in honor of Mustai Karim.
